TMJ
Appliances
(Nightguards, occlusal splints)
A removable custom fabricated appliance that
is used by the patient at night (or daytime) to limit the deleterious effects that are
caused by clenching and grinding to the teeth, musculature and the TMJ. Indications for
such appliances would be for patients who:
| 1. |
Are chronic clenchers or grinders (day or night
time) |
| 2. |
Demonstrate occlusal / incisal attrition (wearing
down of tooth surfaces) |
| 3. |
Complain of recurrent headaches due to bruxism /
clenching |
| 4. |
Complain of myofacial (muscular facial) pain upon
awakening |
| 5. |
Increased clicking / popping of the joint (TMJ) upon
opening and closing of the mouth |
| 6. |
Pain upon yawning |
The 2 appliances of choice are the BRUX-EZETM
and the REM-E-DEZETM.
The BRUZ-EZE is indicated in individuals whose situation is not quite so
severe. One of the primary causes of clenching and grinding is stress. The BRUX-EZE
appliance combines the advantages of a hard acrylic splint with those of a more pliable
splint.
The REM-E-DEZE is indicated for individuals who are heavy clenches and bruxers
/ grinders. It has a hard outer laminate construction with a pliable inner tooth and
tissue surface to offer the best of both worlds -- lasting durability and custom comfort.
